Meningitis B Vaccine in Edinburgh

Quick answer

The MenB vaccine is free on the NHS in Scotland for babies, and for a limited time from 2026 for some higher-risk teenagers and new students. Everyone else, including most adults and older students, can have it privately at our Edinburgh pharmacies. It's a different vaccine from MenACWY, so one doesn't replace the other.

The meningococcal B (MenB) vaccine is routinely given free on the NHS in Scotland to babies, and, for a time-limited period starting summer 2026, to some older teenagers and new college and university students judged to be at higher risk of exposure. Outside those groups, including most adults, older students, and anyone who misses the catch-up window, MenB vaccination is available privately at our Edinburgh pharmacies after a consultation. It's a separate vaccine from meningitis ACWY (MenACWY), so having one doesn't give you protection from the other.

Who gets the MenB vaccine on the NHS in Scotland?

Routinely, only babies. NHS inform confirms the MenB vaccine is offered with other routine vaccinations to all babies in Scotland, with doses at 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 12 to 13 months old. Beyond infancy, MenB has not historically been part of the routine Scottish schedule for teenagers or adults in the way that MenACWY is.

That changed temporarily in 2026. Following meningitis outbreaks in England, Public Health Scotland announced a time-limited MenB catch-up programme for young people at higher risk of exposure to meningococcal group B bacteria, starting in July 2026. It doesn't cover every teenager or student — only specific groups, which we cover below. If you don't fall into one of those groups, MenB is something you'd need to arrange privately.

Why are teenagers and university students asking about MenB?

Because a small number of eligible groups are now being offered it free, and new students in particular are at higher risk of meningococcal disease. NHS Lothian's eligibility criteria for the catch-up programme cover under-25s starting their first undergraduate degree in 2026-27, under-25s starting a first college course while living in shared student accommodation, and young people born between 1 March 2008 and 28 February 2009 or who were in S6 during 2025-26. Public Health Scotland's own guidance explains why: data from the last five years shows infants under two, 18 to 19 year olds and first-year university students are the groups most likely to develop serious meningococcal illness, largely because new students mix with people from many different backgrounds and pick up new strains of bacteria they haven't met before.

If you're a student who doesn't meet those specific criteria — for example, you're starting a later year of study, you're over 25, or you're commuting from home rather than living in shared accommodation — you won't be offered MenB free on the NHS, even though you may still want the protection before moving into halls or shared housing. That's a reasonable and common reason to ask about it privately.

How many doses of the MenB vaccine do you need?

Two doses for the current catch-up programme, or three for the routine infant schedule. Public Health Scotland states that two doses are essential for full protection under the young people's catch-up programme, rather than the three-dose primary course (8 weeks, 12 weeks, 12 to 13 months) used for babies. The UK Health Security Agency's Green Book chapter on meningococcal disease sets out both schedules in detail and confirms boosting intervals haven't yet been established for at-risk individuals having MenB outside the routine infant programme.

If you're a new student and you're not sure whether you qualify for the free NHS catch-up offer, bring your university or college offer letter to your consultation and we'll talk through your options, including private vaccination if you don't meet the criteria. — Emmanuel Ebube Umezulike, superintendent pharmacist

Is MenB the same as the MenACWY vaccine?

No — they protect against different types of meningococcal bacteria. MenB protects specifically against meningococcal group B, while MenACWY vaccine protects against four separate groups: A, C, W and Y. Many Scottish students will already have had MenACWY through the school programme at around age 14, but that doesn't cover group B disease, which is why the two are discussed separately. If you're weighing up both, our meningitis ACWY vaccine in Edinburgh page covers who that one's usually recommended for, including travel and Hajj or Umrah.

Can I get the meningitis B vaccine at a pharmacy in Edinburgh?

Yes, if you don't qualify for the free NHS catch-up programme. Our Edinburgh branches offer MenB vaccination privately after a short consultation to check your history and suitability. This is a straightforward option for students starting university outside the eligible cohorts, for people moving into shared accommodation for work rather than study, or for anyone who simply wants MenB protection that the current NHS programme doesn't extend to them.

Can I get a meningitis B vaccine for free?

Only if you're a baby on the routine schedule, or you fall into one of the specific groups covered by the 2026 catch-up programme described above. If you think you might be eligible, your GP practice or local NHS immunisation team is the right first stop, since the free programme is delivered through the NHS rather than through private pharmacies. If you've checked and you're not eligible, or the timing doesn't work for you — for example, your term starts before an NHS appointment is available — a private consultation with us can usually be arranged more quickly.

What if I didn't go through mainstream education, or I'm coming from outside Scotland?

You can still be assessed for the catch-up programme. Eligibility is based on your birth date, your S6 year or your course start date rather than the type of school you attended, so home-educated young people and those outside mainstream education aren't excluded automatically. If you're moving to study in Edinburgh from elsewhere in the UK and didn't complete your MenB doses before you left, or you're an international student, your local NHS immunisation team is still the right first point of contact to check what you're entitled to before you consider a private appointment with us.

If you'd rather cover meningitis protection more broadly before term starts, it's also worth reading about student vaccinations in Edinburgh, and if chickenpox exposure in shared accommodation is also on your mind, see our chickenpox vaccine in Edinburgh page. You can find opening details for one of our central locations on the Newington travel clinic page, or book your MenB consultation online and let us know if you think you might qualify for the free NHS catch-up so we can check before your appointment.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get the meningitis B vaccine in Edinburgh?

If you qualify for the free 2026 NHS catch-up programme, it's arranged through your GP practice or local NHS immunisation team. If you don't qualify, or want it sooner, all our Edinburgh pharmacies offer MenB vaccination privately after a short consultation.

Can I get the meningitis B vaccine at a pharmacy?

Yes. Pharmacies with travel and vaccination clinics, including ours, can give the MenB vaccine privately to people who aren't covered by the current NHS programme, following a consultation to check your history and suitability.

Can I get a meningitis B vaccine for free?

Only if you're a baby on the routine schedule, or you meet the specific criteria for the 2026 catch-up programme, such as starting university under 25 or being born in a specific eligible date range. Outside those groups, MenB is a private vaccination.

Do university students in Scotland need the meningitis B vaccine?

Some new students are being offered it free under the temporary 2026 catch-up programme because first-year students mix with new groups of people and carry a higher risk of meningococcal disease. Students outside the eligible criteria can still choose to have it privately.

How many doses of MenB vaccine are needed?

The routine infant schedule uses three doses. The 2026 catch-up programme for young people uses two doses, both needed for full protection. Your pharmacist will confirm the right schedule for your age and circumstances.

Is MenB the same as the MenACWY vaccine?

No. MenB protects against meningococcal group B, while MenACWY protects against four different groups: A, C, W and Y. Many students have already had MenACWY at school, but that doesn't protect against group B disease.

Will having MenACWY already mean I don't need MenB?

No, they're separate vaccines against different bacteria groups, so having had MenACWY doesn't provide MenB protection. Your pharmacist can explain both if you're unsure which, if either, is relevant to you.
