The meningitis ACWY (MenACWY) vaccine is a single dose recommended for travel to higher-risk regions such as the African meningitis belt, required for Hajj and Umrah, and offered free on the NHS in Scotland to secondary school pupils and eligible under-25s. Outside those NHS routes, it's available privately at our Edinburgh pharmacies, matched to your trip dates or pilgrimage requirements.

Do I need the meningitis vaccine for Hajj?

Yes, if you're travelling for Hajj or Umrah, proof of MenACWY vaccination is required, not just recommended. NaTHNaC confirms that all travellers arriving for Hajj or for seasonal work in Hajj zones must have proof of vaccination with a quadrivalent (ACWY) meningococcal vaccine received at least 10 days before arrival, and this requirement applies to anyone aged one year or older according to communication from the Saudi authorities. The vaccine is also recommended for all Hajj travellers for their own personal protection against groups A, C, W and Y meningococcal disease, separate from the certificate requirement itself.

A conjugate MenACWY vaccine, the type routinely used in the UK, is accepted as valid proof for five years from the date of vaccination. Your certificate should show the vaccine name, type and date, ideally issued and stamped by the vaccinating pharmacist, nurse or doctor, and it can also be recorded in an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) booklet if you have one. If you're also planning a Yellow Fever-risk stopover before Hajj, our yellow fever vaccination in Edinburgh page covers that separately.

Which countries need a meningitis vaccine?

Mainly countries in and around the African meningitis belt, plus Saudi Arabia for Hajj and Umrah. NaTHNaC describes the meningitis belt as stretching across the dry savannah regions of sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east, where outbreaks occur particularly during the dry season. The UK Health Security Agency's Green Book confirms MenACWY vaccination is recommended for long-stay or high-risk visitors to sub-Saharan Africa, such as those living or working closely with local people, or backpackers, rather than for every visitor to every country in the region. Outbreaks elsewhere in the world can also trigger recommendations for specific destinations from time to time, which is why we check your exact itinerary rather than working from a fixed list.

If you're travelling for Hajj or Umrah, bring your itinerary and any existing vaccination record to your appointment — we'll issue a properly dated and stamped certificate you can rely on, and check whether ten days is enough time before you fly. — Emmanuel Ebube Umezulike, superintendent pharmacist

Is MenACWY free on the NHS?

Only through specific NHS routes, not for travel reasons. NHS inform confirms all young people in S3 (around 14 years old) in Scotland are eligible for the MenACWY vaccine as part of the school-based immunisation programme, and if you didn't take it up at school, the Green Book confirms you remain eligible for the free NHS dose until your 25th birthday. If you're within that group and haven't had it, your GP practice or local NHS immunisation team is the right first stop.

For travel or Hajj and Umrah specifically, though, MenACWY isn't one of the vaccines Scotland provides free. NHS inform's list of free NHS travel vaccines in Scotland covers diphtheria/polio/tetanus, hepatitis A, typhoid and cholera, and separately notes that meningitis vaccines may need to be paid for privately if they're only needed for travel purposes. That's true even if you already had MenACWY at school, since a school dose given for routine adolescent protection doesn't come with a travel certificate, and Hajj and Umrah pilgrims specifically need a dated, stamped record showing the vaccine and date given.

Are students still eligible, and how does that interact with travel?

If you're under 25 and never had the school MenACWY dose, you may still be able to get it free through the NHS as a catch-up, separately from any travel plans. See our student vaccinations in Edinburgh page for more on what's routinely offered to students in Scotland. But if you need a specific certificate for Hajj, Umrah, or entry requirements for another country, or your trip is sooner than an NHS appointment can be arranged, a private consultation is usually the quicker route, and we can issue the certificate you need on the day.

How long does the MenACWY vaccine last, and when should I have it before travel?

A single dose is used for anyone aged one year and over, including adults, and the Green Book confirms one 0.5ml dose provides the recommended protection from age one upwards, rather than a multi-dose course. For Hajj and Umrah, it needs to have been given at least 10 days before you arrive for the certificate to be valid, so booking a few weeks ahead of travel gives you a comfortable margin. For general travel to meningitis belt countries, it's still worth having it as early as practical before you fly, since it takes time for full protection to develop and you may want to combine the appointment with other pre-trip vaccines.

Can I get the meningitis vaccine at a pharmacy?

Yes. All our Edinburgh branches offer MenACWY vaccination as part of a travel health consultation, including for Hajj and Umrah, where we can also issue your vaccination certificate. Bring your travel dates, any existing vaccination record, and details of your pilgrimage or itinerary so we can check the ten-day window and any other requirements for your specific trip.

Booking your meningitis ACWY vaccine in Edinburgh

If you're planning wider Hajj or Umrah preparations, our Hajj and Umrah vaccinations in Edinburgh page covers the fuller picture beyond MenACWY alone, and if you're weighing up MenACWY against MenB for a different reason, see our meningitis B vaccine in Edinburgh page, since the two protect against different meningococcal groups. Book your MenACWY consultation online and tell us your departure date so we can make sure your certificate is issued in good time.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the meningitis vaccine for Hajj?

Yes. Proof of MenACWY vaccination given at least 10 days before arrival is a requirement for Hajj and Umrah, not just a recommendation, and applies to travellers aged one year and over. It's also recommended for personal protection against the disease.

Is MenACWY free on the NHS?

Only through specific NHS routes: S3 pupils in Scotland, and anyone under 25 who missed that school dose. For travel or Hajj and Umrah certificate purposes specifically, it isn't one of Scotland's free NHS travel vaccines and is usually arranged privately.

How long does the MenACWY vaccine last?

A single dose is used for anyone aged one year and over. For Hajj and Umrah certificate purposes, a conjugate MenACWY vaccine (the type routinely used in the UK) is accepted as valid proof for five years from the vaccination date.

Can I get the meningitis vaccine at a pharmacy?

Yes. Our Edinburgh branches offer MenACWY vaccination as part of a travel health consultation, including issuing the certificate needed for Hajj and Umrah, after checking your travel dates and itinerary.

Which countries need a meningitis vaccine?

It's mainly recommended for the African meningitis belt, stretching from Senegal to Ethiopia, for long-stay or high-risk travellers, and required with a certificate for Hajj and Umrah in Saudi Arabia. Your pharmacist checks your specific itinerary rather than a fixed country list.

Do I need a new MenACWY vaccine if I already had it at school?

For general immunity, no, if you had it within the NHS schedule. But for Hajj and Umrah you need a dated, stamped certificate showing the vaccine and date given, which a school record may not readily provide, so check with your pharmacist before you travel.

How soon before travel should I have the MenACWY vaccine?

At least 10 days before arrival for a valid Hajj or Umrah certificate, and ideally a few weeks ahead for general travel so protection has time to develop and you can combine the appointment with any other vaccines you need.
